The Afterschool Centre for Career Development completed the inaugural class of its Solar Engineering Training which is a part of its Green Jobs Initiative. Held in partnership with the ASteven Group and Clean Technology Hub the programme is aimed at training unemployed young people to become solar engineers and entrepreneurs. The project is also tooling and providing access to finance and markets they need to deploy solar solutions and provide after sales services thereby decreasing the current 92% energy poverty that is plaguing our country, Nigeria.

 

Held between November 26th – December 8th 2018,the programme catalyzed the training, tooling and financing and market entry for sixty (60) solar energy engineers and entrepreneurs in Calabar,Nigeria. The Solar Engineering Training also provided participants with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in the renewable energy sector enabling attendees find their foot in the solar energy industry value chain for self and corporate employment.

 

The programme curriculum included: The Global Energy Crisis, Nigeria’s Energy Industry, Introduction To Renewable And Non Renewable Energy, Solar Energy and PV Components, Battery, Inverter & Charge Controllers, Assembling & Dissembling Of Solar Home Kits as well as Optical Led Tester Machine Demonstration. The Curriculum also covered Energy Saving Technology and Appliances, Solar Homeand Thermal System Installation, Maintenance & Troubleshooting. Understanding The Solar Business, Market Intelligence, Business Development, Sales And Marketing
The Solar Engineering Training participants were taken through theoretical and practical lessons delivered through an interactive facilitation style with the objective of enabling them understand the energy industry- the crisis, the gaps, the opportunities and the future of the sector both nationally and globally. The Enterprise session of the progamme also provided enterprise development training and tools to enable attendees build and run their solar businesses at the end of the course

 

Speaking at the Solar Engineering Training Graduation ceremony, the Special Guest of Honour, Barr. Eyo Ekpo, Fmr. Business Development Executive, GE Transportation and current Gubernatorial Candidate for the Social Democratic Party in Cross River State charged participants to leverage the skills and other benefits of the Solar Jobs project to gain market share in the Green and Renewable Energy (GRE) sector. He also admonished participants to also look our for opportunities and develop ideas to solve the challenges in our country.

Before I enrolled for the solar training, I didn’t know much about the energy crisis.I was even sceptical about how solar would work in our society. But seeing the knowledge and technology we were exposed to in this training; I am excited about what the future holds for my Solar Business!!- Victory Onah

 

The solar engineering training was an eye opener, it made me realize that I can become a Solar Entrepreneur, i no longer depending on conventional energy, I have ditched my generating set and now I have 24 hours electricity.- Jacqueline Akadang
