The 2019 Edition of the Afterschool Centre for Career Development Digital Summer Academy was held on August 11th  – September 6th 2019. Metamorphosed from the ACCD Pre-Tertiary programme which is focused on Career Development programming for Secondary School leavers. The Digital Summer Academy is aimed at improving the digital skills of young people in our community and enabling their learning, employment and engagement within the Information Communications and Technology Industry.

The programme curriculum covered Web Designing & Development, Social Media Management, Graphics Design, Android App Development, Photography, Animation & Video Production, and Google Tools. Other areas covered during the programme include Career Counselling, Mentoring sessions, Psychometric test, Personal Hygeine, Decision Making, Communications Skills, Goal Setting, Free Software Installation, Leadership and Financial Education, Excursions to tourism hotspots as well as a #DSAHotseat session with leading professionals in Nigeria.

Delivered in partnership with World Connect; the 2019 Digital Summer Academy participants were taken through theoretical and practical lessons delivered through an interactive facilitation style using games and the case study model with the objective of enabling them develop fluency in most digital languages;build on their collective Summer Academy projects as well as personal Post Summer Academy ideas. The programme also featured a PitchFest session where over 30 participants pitched their project ideas during the Academy’s Graduation ceremony.

Speaking at the Academy’s Graduation, Miss Uke Ogah,the Keynote Speaker and On Air personality with HITFM charged participants on the topic Kickstarting your Career. She centred her keynote on the power of goal setting, decision making and taking steps to achieve one’s goals. She shared her personal Career Story with the participants on the various jobs she took on before she landed her dream job. She encouraged participants to volunteer,take up internship opportunities and practice all they have learnt in the Summer Academy  as they kickstart their careers.

The Winners of the 2019 Digital Summer Academy PitchFest included: Abigail Johnson who won the first prize with her learning App Idea – Practik  – An online learning App for students to learn Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses. Her first Prize included a HP Laptop,6 months incubation and data support. The 2nd Prize winner Treasure Ose- Osarwore won a Lenovo Laptop, 3 months incubation and data support for his Kids Promotion App – an extracurricular learning platform for Children that enables them learn while connecting that learning to a career options while the 3rd Prize winner Sonia Effiom won a Lenovo IdeaPad laptop,1 month incubation and data support for her Ready to Wear  Blog– an online marketplace for Fashion designers to showcase and sell their ready to wear pieces.

The 2019 Social Development project of the Digital Summer Academy class was launched by the participants. The project is a #SolarforBRCShelter initiative. For four weeks the participants fundraised and purchased and donated an 80Watts Solar home system to the Basic Rights Council Initiative Shelter for Children. Other highlights of the Academy included the DSA Hotseat session which was graced by the following professionals, Mr. Emmanuel Tarfa, CEO EnzoKrypton Company, Mrs Enwongo Abasi Okon, Deputy Director, Cross River State Micro Enterprise Development Agency, Miss Faith Okon,Journalist, Cross River Broadcasting Agency, Miss Veralyn Chinenye,Blogger and Spoken Word Artiste, Mr. Richard Ballentine, Programmes Specialist UNICEF, Mr. Wisdom Enalebor, Registration Associate, UNHCR,Mr. Michael Odere, Relationship Manager, First Bank Plc, Miss Gloria Edet, Radio Host, My Business, My Tomorrow Show, Mr. Chibuzor Agomuoh, Convener, The Sunrise Project as well as Engr. Wofai Ewa, Former Deputy Gubernatorial Candidate, Social Democratic Party, Cross River State.

My review of the DSA programme is that it is a good platform to push youths to further their knowledge.I will highly recommend it to anybody looking for a digital training experience. I have honed my skills in photography, social media management through the Academy and I have opened an Instagram account to delve into nature and landscape photography.- Derek Ikem

Afterschool Centre for Career Development (formerly known as Afterschool Peer Mentoring Project) is a non-governmental, capacity development organization committed to inspiring, investing and engaging young people as well as facilitating growth opportunities for young persons in transitional stages of their lives.
